Decluttering my personal foundations

I dont know about you but with the current bad weather during lockdown and the Covid-19 crisis and the fact that Boris Johnson has again stopped half of the beauty industry including Makeup Artists from working again, Ive been looking at things to keep me busy. At the moment Im decluttering, sanitising and disinfecting my entire house including my wardrobe and large, ever growing personal makeup collection!

Its very easy to go through all of my makeup during lockdown as Ive been avoiding wearing makeup and looking after my skin so the first step was pulling together all of my foundations. I honestly thought I had more than those pictured below but 14 foundations (one isnt pictured as I found it in my bathroom!) is still too many.

I do keep 2 different sets, one for summer and one for winter (my natural colour).

My foundations:

  • MAC Studio Fix Fluid
  • Loreal True Match
  • The Ordinary Coverage Foundation
  • The Ordinary Serum Foundation
  • MAC Face & Body
  • Jane Iredale Pure Pressed Mineral Foundation
  • IT Cosmetics CC+ Illumination

It Cosmetics CC+ Illumination

The first foundation that Im definitly getting rid of is the It Cosmetics CC+ Illumination in Light. As you can see from the swatch even the ‘Light’ shade is very dark and yellow toned on my skin. The foundation is also a heavy coverage and I prefer some of the other foundations that I own to this one. It does last most of the day however it feels heavy on my skin and when Im wearing it, I never forget that I have foundation on. Its also never going to be a shade match for me and so it has to go.

MAC Studio Fix Fluid

One of my favourite foundations had always been MAC Studio Fix Fluid and Ive been in love with it for years for both my clients and myself. Whilst I do still adore this foundation I must admit that I have found 2 more reasonably priced dupes for this formula and coverage (see below) and so I will be using up my NC15 and NC20 then I wont be replacing them within my personal makeup, however I will still be using them for clients.

Loreal True Match Foundation

One of the dupes that I have found for MAC Studio Fix Fluid is Loreal True Match. I have the shades 2N and 3N and I believe that they are an almost perfect dupe for their MAC counterparts.

Loreal True Match is available in 40 shadesand the formula provides perfect, ‘natural and true-to-skin’ coverage. I find that it is a medium / buildable coverage that lasts on my skin for upto 8 hours and also wears well. It is also enriched with Hyaluronic Acid to keep skin moisturised throughout the day and look more radiant. As most of you will know, I have sensitive skin and Eczema and this foundation is suitable for my skin. Not only that it also has the added benefit of SPF17 and when powdered, doesnt create any flashback on cameras! Whats not to love? As you can see, mine are well used and due to be replaced soon. The only question is, will I continue using Loreal True Match or keep using the next dupe for MAC Studio Fix which I am also loving at the moment?

The Ordinary Coverage Foundation

The Ordinary Coverage Foundation is my second dupe for MAC Studio Fix Fluid. They have a similar consitency and coverage. This foundation is medium to full coverage blends very easy and for my skin type, lasts at least 6-8 hours before a touch-up and it wears really nicely. Another benefit for me personally is that whilst I get the coverage I want, I dont feel like Im wearing a ‘thick’ foundation.

The only downside is that there are currently only 21 shades (full swatch list can be found here) however the two that I own are a perfect match for me in both summer 2.0P and winter 1.2P.

I actually think that at this moment in time, when I have finished the MAC and Loreal foundations, I wont be repurchasing them for my personal makeup bag as I do prefer the £5.90 price point of this foundation.

The Ordinary Serum Foundation

Unfortunately, I will be giving away The Ordinary Serum Foundation in 1.2P. There is nothing wrong with this foundation. It is lightweight in formula with a light to medium coverage. Again it only comes in a shade range of 21 shades but the shades are varied to cover most skin tones. The foundation looks natural with a lightweight serum feel, as the name suggests however whilst it is a great product, I cant bear to swap this foundation for my MAC Face & Body foundations!

MAC Face & Body Foundation

This leads me on nicely to my go-to summer foundation for myself and natural/dewy foundation for clients: MAC Face & Body. I have 3 shades which I use independently or mix together to get that perfect shade all year around. I have C1, C2 and C3.

This foundation gets bad reviews by many people as they try to apply it with a sponge or brush, and without first really shaking the bottle to mix the suspended pigment. After vigerous shaking, this unique formula needs to be warmed up in the hands which emulsifies the product (it gets thicker), then is applied with fingers to the skin. Whilst this isnt ideal at the moment for use on clients, I love, love, love this foundation for my everyday makeup.

I will definitly be repurchasing MAC Face & Body Foundation foundations. I have dry skin with some pigmentation/unevenness due to my age but most days I only want light coverage and don’t have time to mess around with sponges and brushes. I love that it is so quick to apply, is lightweight but also evens out my complexion without drying ot my skin. This foundation also lasts well and doesnt break apart or cling to any dry patches making it perfect for my eczema prome skin.

It’s affordable since the price, especially if you get the large bottle brings this to drugstore price level, although you may need to have two shades to mix to get a good match. TLDR: Quick, reliable, doesn’t dry me out, oxidize or irritate, I can get a great match thanks to the white, and gives me a my skin but better look in no time. I truly love it! The only downside to this foundation is the price at £27 for 50ml however I believe that its definitly worth the costs.

Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation

Last but not least is the Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation. This was one of my first professional foundations that I purchased for clients and I still adore mineral foundations. This product is a powder foundation, concealer and sunscreen in one with SPF 20 UVB/UVA. It looks like your skin but better and is almost weightless. The only reason why I am decluttering these powder foundations (I have Satin for my lighter shade and Suntan for my summer shade), is that they are now quite old and I know that I wont apply them onto my skin.

Conclusion

So to sum up, I will be passing on the IT Cosmetics CC+ Illimination foundation and either using up most of my current foundations or passing them onto family.

The only ones that I will be using up and repurchasing are The Ordinary Coverage Foundation and MAC Face and Body Foundation. This will give me two different types of foundation in different shades: a light to medium coverage foundation (MAC Face & Body Foundation) and a medium to full coverage foundation (The Ordinary Full Coverage Foundation) to suit any of my needs or wants when it comes to foundation. I will try The Ordinary Serum Foundation again before I pass it on however I dont think it will replace my beloved Face & Body!

De-Cluttering my Personal Makeup – Part 3

Part 3 – Bronzer, Blusher and Highlighter

Thank you for getting to Part 3 of my Summer Makeup Bag de-clutter. This all began when I de-cluttered my Professional Makeup kit and felt so much better just having the products which I loved rather than hoarding products just because I’d purchased them. I looked at my personal makeup bag and spare case and felt that same dread of not being able to find anything and made my mind up that the products that I don’t like or don’t reach for, have to go.

When I say that products have to go, they go to one of 4 places: My winter makeup bag, Friends and Family, Donate to a charity (see the end of the email for details) or they go in the bin (expired or completely minging products).

Bronzers

A girl can never have too many bronzers, or so I believed! I cant believe that I had all different shades which were much too warm for my skin tone and made me look extremely orange (more like Donald Trump!!!)

With this horrific look in mind, I made the decision that all of my really warm bronzers had to go to a good home, and not mine. I only kept 3 bronzers in the end. One cream and two powder products.

😨 What did I de-clutter? 😨

As much as I used to adore my @maccosmeticsuk Give Me Sun, I’m definitely not warm skinned or tanned enough to wear this shade. I’m also currently more into subtle sun ☀️ kissed shades and so I’ve sanitised this product and donated it.

I have also de-cluttered my Benefit Hula Bronzer. I know that its a cult favourite but I just couldn’t get it to work for me with the tricky little box that you cant get your brush into, and don’t get me started on the weird little brush that comes with the product!

It hurt my heart to get rid of my Jane Iredale Moonglow and So-Bronze 2 bronzers but they were really old and far too glittery and gold toned for my current preferences. These went in the bin as I’m sure that they have now expired.

💖 What did I keep? 💖

I decided that only need 3 bronzers. Well I only really need two but I couldnt choose between 2 of them and so theyr’e both staying!!!

Firstly is my Marc Jacobs Beauty Omega Bronze in shade 102 Tantric. This is a universally flattering shade that blends seamlessly with your skin and comes in a gorgeous super-sized glossy black compact.  What more can I say other than it is beautiful.

I also can’t live without my @toofaced Chocolate Soleil ☀️ bronzer as it’s a perfect shade, not too cool or too warm and can be built up or worn delicately for a sun kissed glow.  Did I also mention that this bronzer is infused with cocoa powder into its formula, so not only is it long wearing but it smells as good as it looks.

For days when I’m using cream products or no foundation I love my @nipandfab Fix Stick In Golden Tan. I buy mine from @lookfantastic and it’s currently £8.21 instead of the usual price of £10.95 (July 2019). This product is so easy to blend and can be built up when I have more of a tan. Even though the shade is called golden tan, it’s still not too warm on my skin. (see the image below). It is also really easy to use and much cheaper than a lot of other bronzing sticks on the market and in my opinion, just as good.

Blusher

After pulling all my blushers, highlighters and face palettes together, I realised that I do own a lot of these products (they’re mostly in palettes) however I only use certain shades depending upon my skin colour throughout the year and so I don’t need to keep my winter products in my summer makeup bag. I equally don’t need several of the same shade or shades that I don’t wear.

😨 What did I de-clutter? 😨

As much as I adore my @maccosmeticsuk blushers, especially those with an illuminating glow such as Peachykeen 🍑 I have to admit that they are not getting old and I’ve hit pan on all 3 shades. I made the heart wrenching decision to add them to my ‘Back to MAC’ pile and move on!
I also felt that my @nyxcosmetics blushes, whilst great products, were either the wrong shade for me or I had similar colours in products that I preferred.

💖 What did I keep? 💖

I obviously kept my two @narscoventgarden ‘The Multiple’ in shades Orgasm and Portifino. These two shades are gorgeous for summer and give a lovely glow to the skin 😊  This multi-purpose stick can be used on eyes, cheeks, and lips to give you a sheer shimmer that actually lasts all day. It’s creamy formula blends effortlessly and can be built up on all skin tones. This is a ‘must have’ product for holidays and summer.

I also kept one my Marc Jacobs Air Blush in Kink and Kisses. This Soft Glow Duo features two shades that merge together so you can customise your colour for a natural-looking glow. I also want the shade ‘Lines and Last Night’ but at £28 per blush I think I may have to wait a while.

Some days I want cream and others I want powder, depending upon the look I’m wearing. Same for wanting Matte or Shimmer and so I kept my everyday favourite blush by L’Oreal in Sandlewood Pink. I also had to keep my Ciate London Glow To Illuminating Blushes in Matchmaker and Pinch Me. These blushes combine a silky matte blush with an ultra fine powder highlighter which gives a gorgeous glow to your cheeks.

Face Palettes

I wont go into a lot of detail with what I donated as I gave all of them away apart from 2!!!

The Bobbi Brown Peach Illuminating Cheek Palette is ideal for travel as it has an illuminating bronzer in the shade Havana, a blush in shade Pink Coral and a Highlighter in shade Peach. This is a gorgeous palette that is beautiful when worn with or without a tan and saves the problem of travelling with 3 different products. A definite must have.

The next palette which I saved was the Tarte Cosmetics, Double Duty Beauty palette which is a highlight and contour palette. Both the highlight and contour are the perfect shade for my skin tone and it also smells like chocolate. Whats not to love?

Highlighter

Again I had collected far too many of these in my journey to find the perfect shade and formula for my skin. I had many amazing highlighters but I didn’t like or use most of them as I prefer a more natural champagne colour rather than a blinding glow (I am 43 now!)

😨 What did I de-clutter? 😨

I did de-clutter my @clinique highlighting chubby stick as you will see below I had a very similar product which I actually preferred. I found this highlighter to be a bit to stiff and would sometimes take off my foundation.

I also de-cluttered my Illamasqua Beyond Powder in Deity as it was an amazing highlighter but you could see the glow from outer space, which is not my thing!

I also got rid of my Benefit High Beam and MAC Lightscapade highlighters as they are far too pink/white for me.

💖 What did I keep? 💖

As I’m all about the glow this summer, I obvuously kept my Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette as the shade incandescent light is a beautiful natural highlighter.

I also kept my The Balm Mary-Lou Manizer highlighter as it is the perfect champagne colour and the formula is so buttery and soft and it blends easily.

The two cream/liquid products I kept were the @urbandecaycosmetics naked skin highlighting fluid in Sin and the KIKO Radiant Touch Highlighter Stick in 100. Both of these blend beautifully and can be worn to give either a subtle look or built to an amazing glow ✨  All 4 of the highlighters that I kept look good on my skin all year around and so I don’t need to keep searching for a better product when I believe I have found the right ones for me!

De-Cluttering my Personal Makeup – Part 2

Part 2 – Concealer, Foundation & Powders

Following on from Part 1 of my de-cluttering my personal makeup series, I decided to tackle concealers, foundation and powders.

Concealer

As with other aspects of my makeup bag, my summer and winter makeup were mixed in together and there were also products that I had tried and just wasn’t reaching for.

After pulling all my makeup together into sections I discovered that I do own a lot of concealers and don’t use most of them. Some because the shade is more for my winter skin colour and some because I personally don’t like them on my skin. Like most women I’m constantly looking for my favourite under eye concealer for the perfect fresh faced look! 👀

😨 What did I de-clutter? 😨

With regards to throwing away concealers, I got rid of the Maybelline eraser eye concealer as I couldn’t find a shade to suit me and it was also too dry for my ageing under eyes! I also threw out the Obsession Makeup London concealer as this also has a sponge applicator and would be unhygienic to donate.

The following concealers and illuminating products are my absolute favourites and so I kept all of these however I moved some of the shades into to winter makeup case.

I didn’t keep the @benefitcosmeticsuk Boiing concealer in shade 1 in my summer makeup bag however as I love this concealer I have saved it for winter use. Same for my @yslbeauty Touch Eclat in shade 1. I actually threw away my @

💖 What did I keep? 💖

I couldn’t not use my @yslbeauty touch eclat illuminating pen as this is an all year round ‘holy grail’ product for me. I kept the shades 2&3 in my summer makeup bag and put shade 1 away for winter. Not only are they cult classics but no2 brightens up my under eye area naturally and no3 has just enough peach 🍑 tones in it for my skin that is is great for a light weight corrector.

My next favourite is also a cult classic- @benefitcosmetics boi-ing concealer. I moved shade 1 to my winter makeup bag and kept shades 2&3. These cover absolutely anything on my face and blend beautifully. I ❤️ them and have been using them for years. I also have them in my professional makeup kit.

For dark circles, as I suffer from bouts of insomnia, 💤 I can’t live without my @bobbibrownuk corrector in Bisque. When I have darker circles under my eyes 👀 this product is perfect. Its heavier than the YSL Touche Eclat and perfect for those days when I look like a raccoon!!!

Last but not least, for lighter coverage days, rather than using the benefit Boi-ing concealers, I’m turning to the @maccosmeticsuk Studio Fix concealer in shade NC15 and the @loreal true match concealer in shade N2. This seems like a lot of concealer but I only use one or possibly two of them depending upon my dark circles and condition my skin but some days I prefer heavier coverage than others!

Foundation

After pulling all my foundations together into sections I discovered that I only had 3 types of foundation and 2 BB Creams. The foundations are MAC Studio Fix Fluid, MAC Face & Body and L’Oreal True Match. The BB Creams are Garnier BB Cream and the Rimmel BB Cream 9 in 1 Skin Perfecting Super Makeup.

I can tell you now that I threw out all of the BB creams as each of them exaggerated my pores and disappeared from around my nose and chin as the day wore on. I was really disappointed, however due to watching an amazing Beauty Vlogger on YouTube, Jamie Paige (check out her vlogs here) I have decided to possibly try out the IT Cosmetics CC Cream instead.

💖 What did I keep? 💖

I absolutely love all 3 of these foundations that I own and so I made the decision to keep the lighter shades in my winter makeup bag and the darker shades in my summer makeup bag! Makes sense eh?

The foundations are: @maccosmeticsuk Face & Body in shades C1, C2, N3 and NC20. These are a cult favourite for good reason. They are light cover which is buildable to medium coverage but still looks like skin with a soft glow. Beautiful for summer 💋 (Makeup Artist Tip – Apply the first layer of Face & Body with your fingers. The heat from your fingers makes the product much more emollient and adds a tacky layer which is perfect for laying down your 2nd layer with a brush or damp beauty sponge. Your’e welcome xx)

The next are medium buildable foundations which are: @maccosmeticsuk Studio Fix Fluid and @loreal True Match Foundation. I find that the L’Oreal product is actually a dupe for the Studio Fix Fluid but I find that if I’m going to sheer a foundation out, then I’d rather do it with a cheaper foundation! I prefer mixing the L’Oreal product with moisturiser and save the MAC foundation for heavier makeup days.

You don’t need loads of foundation in your personal makeup bag as it will go off before you could ever use it all. Save your money and just pick a couple of favourites.

Setting and Finishing Powders

Over the years I have tried many many powders to find the right ones for my dry, ageing skin and I believe that I have found the perfect ones for me!

I used to use MAC Prep + Prime translucent setting powder but I found that on photographs I ended up with a lot of flash back. Also if I didn’t use enough setting spray, the powder could also be visible on photographs sometimes. I have now moved over to 2 loose setting powders and both of them come in massive jars and so I have to decant them into something more manageable for my dressing table! The first is the Makeup Forever HD Powder and the 2nd is the Coty Airspun powder in Translucent Extra Coverage. You can only buy the Coty powder in the UK through Amazon here. This is my new all time favourite loose setting powder as it is very finely milled and leaves your foundation with an airbrushed finish. The only drawback is the fragrance. It reminds me of my nanna’s makeup bag and so I don’t mind it but if you don’t like fragrance, stay away from this powder.

I have also kept my MAC Cosmetics Mineralize Skinfinish in Medium however this will be living in my handbag as I find touching up with loose powder when I’m out can be a bit of a nightmare.

My new favourite finishing powder is the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette. When I save up enough money I will be buying a separate compact of Dim Light and swapping it out for my Mineralize Skinfinish.

These Lighting Powders, use “Photoluminescent Technology to filter out harsh light and refine the appearance of the complexion. Each of these high-tech, soft-focus finishing powders recreate an exquisitely flattering light source. The powders can be applied individually or layered to imbue skin with a multidimensional glow”. This advertising is absolutely true, these are little miracle powders which now I’ve tried them I will be buying the full size compacts.

De-Cluttering my Personal Makeup Part 1

Part 1 – Setting and Finishing Sprays and Primers

So as with any makeup lover my collection of personal makeup was getting out of hand. My winter and summer makeup were mixed in together and I had plenty of makeup which I just haven’t reached for in a long time. As I’ve already de-cluttered my professional makeup kit, I thought it was time that I did the same for my personal products !

Setting & Finishing Sprays

Not only did I have setting/finishing sprays on my dressing table but also more in my backup makeup case. After pulling all my makeup together into sections I discovered that I had 9 setting sprays and only one face!!!

😨 What did I De-Clutter? 😨

Whilst I did get rid of my NYX Dewy and Matte Setting Sprays, and the OSMO Blinding Shine Illuminating Finisher. I want to note that there was nothing wrong with them. They just didn’t suit my skin type.  Even though I have dry to normal skin, they dewy sprays made my skin look ‘sweaty’ and the matte spray dried my skin out.

I also de-cluttered my Tarte Cosmetics Rain Forest of the Sea Setting Mist. This was a lovely product but I only had the travel size (30ml) and so as I had virtually used up the product I decided to finish it off and keep the bottle for when I’m travelling with hand luggage only.

💖 What did I Keep 💖

Anyone that knows me will guess that I kept my Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray and MAC Cosmetics Fix + These two were no brainers 🧠 as they are by far the best two setting sprays that I have ever tried. Both extend the life of my makeup, even in heat!!!!

The next product is a bit bougie but it’s the Marc Jacobs Beauty re(cover)
perfecting coconut setting mist. This product is new to me and smells absolutely gorgeous 🥥 It’s also supposed to be hydrating which is what I’m looking for in the summer months.

The setting spray contains “five coconut actives: coconut alkanes for long wear, coconut milk for deep hydration, coconut water for refreshing electrolytes, coconut polysaccharides to help condition skin, and coconut-derived fragrance for a delicate, delicious experience” I must say that so far it feels and smells beautiful on my skin but I’ve only been wearing it on no makeup days ! Now I need to really test it under makeup.

Finally and not least is the Prep-set-glow finishing spray by @iconic.london This finishing spray is an absolutely gorgeous hydrating mist that moisturises & contains light reflecting properties to give you a gentle illuminated glow rather than looking sweaty or glittery! I have the original spray but have them both in my professional makeup kit.

The next spray is a bit of a cheat as I don’t use it as a setting spray!!! I love the ELF Illuminating Primer Mist for spraying onto my beauty blender when I’m blending my makeup. (Its now called the Dewy setting mist). My philosophy is Sponge+Setting Spray = Non Moving Makeup.

Primer and under makeup Products

After pulling all my makeup together into sections, I discovered that I do own a lot of primer and under makeup products/moisturisers and as it’s summer my needs have changed with my foundation (or lack of).

😨 What did I De-Clutter? 😨

I’m afraid to say that I have moved my Illamasqua Hydra Veil and Beyond Veil primers, @maccosmetics skin base visage and ELF under eye primer, Into my winter makeup bag. Whilst I love these products under heavier coverage foundation I just don’t need them during the summer.  I prefer something more light weight or something that I can wear on its own. The only 2 primers which I donated were the Smashbox Photo Finish and W7 Camera Ready primers. They are both great primers but as I have older skin (Im 43 – Shhhhhhh) and its also normal to dry, I prefer my products to be more hydrating.

💖 What did I Keep 💖

As its summer, my Clarins Beauty Flash Balm (decanted as I broke the lid 😲)  and Marc Jacobs Dew You? Dew Drops are a must for luminous, healthy looking skin. These two products are more light weight and give your skin a radiant glow. Great for under MAC Face & Body foundation.  I also mix the Dew You? Dew Drops into the Face & Body foundation for more of a dewy look.

I also kept the Marc Jacobs Perfecting Coconut 🥥 face primer as it is super hydrating and nourishing for the summer months and it smells absolutely beautiful.

Finally, I kept my Clinique Moisture Surge Intense on my dressing table as in summer I also like to wear this under foundation and find that I don’t need to wear a primer at all. I have found as a Makeup Artist that you don’t need to wear a primer every day, a good moisturiser will do the trick and give you the same results. You will notice that all of my personal primers and hydrating or illuminating rather than heavy duty.
