Glossy and Wet Look Shoots – 3

After booking my model – Talia from J’adore Models I have sent over the Call Sheet for theTalia shoot to the agency via a Dropbox Folder. I find that this is the best way as J’adore Models have their own folder in my Dropbox with all of the call sheets, information sheets, maps and transport info and finally a folder for each model with their edited photos in.  As I book my models in advance, I find that after sending the call sheets via email they end up asking me for them again the day before the shoot and so this way they have access to everything in case I am working and can’t resend anything!

A copy of my call sheet for this shoot can be seen here – Call Sheet for 17 03 2016 Summer Look and Gloss Look

 Shoot Ideas

With regards to the actual shoot itself I have quite a few ideas as I have previously spoken about. Some of the ideas for this shoot can be seen below in my 2 Pinterest Boards however I am looking at keeping the Glossy Eye shoot cropped tightly and so the hair will be tied back and I will put my model in a boob tube type top so we don’t accidentally see any clothing.  For the Wet Look shoot I will be doing head and shoulders style shots as I also want the wet look on the models skin.  Again she will be in a boob tube type top so that she is partly covered up.

Lighting

Both of these shoots will be taking place in a studio as I want the lighting to be quite specific.  The style I like for both of these shoots is called Butterfly or Paramount Lighting (as it was popular in the 1930’s in Hollywood) The reason it is called Butterfly lighting is because the light is directly in front of the model but at a steep angle facing down which creates a shadow right under the nose that resembles a butterfly. It is widely considered to be a beauty lighting set up, especially for women as it pronounces the cheekbones and creates natural contouring due to the shadows which are cast by the light.  I have also been advised that it is a good idea to have a golden coloured ‘bounce board’ below the model to use as a fill light as it will give a beautiful soft glow to the models face.  I have found a diagram of the set up I want on http://www.mannersphoto.com/

Another style I want to try is called backlighting.  This is set up as per butterfly lighting but you also have a light positioned behind the model directed at the back of their head.  This adds depth and drama to the lighting and from what I have seen on many photography websites looks amazing in the final photos. I have found a diagram of the set up I want to use on www.digitalcameraworld.com

As can be expected (I’m a bit of a nerd and also love Pinterst) I have a separate board on Pinterest for all of the information which I find on various websites relating to lighting techniques. My Photographic Lighting board can be seen here

Glossy and Wet Look Shoots – 2

TaliaThis post is a big of a tag on to my previous post as I’m hoping that whilst I have Talia booked for the day and 6 hours of my Portfolio Development Module at Uni, I can use this time to transform Talia again from Natural Makeup to High Gloss Eyes and finally to a Wet Look Shoot.

Again I am going to be going the experimentation for this shoot on myself using different products and techniques and will be detailing them on a separate post for those of you who are interested.  I am hoping that this experimentation at home will ensure that I have enough time in the makeup and photography studios to get the 2 shoots done.

The second look of the afternoon, and Talia’s 3rd look of the day will be in the style of a wet look shoot.  I’m not going into too much detail now but I will matt the eyes back down and then create the wet look using products.  Ill give more info on the products when I do my experimentation.  I like the idea of the wet look as its not one which you see often in magazines and when I came to do my research on the internet, there weren’t many ideas out there for me to take inspiration from.  There were the usual wet t-shirt photos but I’m looking at a more editorial style rather than lads mag!!!!

Some of the ideas for this shoot, i.e. wet look, can be seen below or on my Pinterest Board – Here

Hair

For the hair I am going to keep it long and loose and wet.  I will create a bit of a curl before I add the wet look products as I don’t want the hair to be limp.

Recreate Shoot 9 – Lighting

For this shoot I was quite sure that I knew the style of lighting I wanted to use and also how to set it up. I wanted the lighting mainly on the two models with minimal shadows. With this in mind I knew that I would have to have a light at the front of the models. I also wanted there to be a soft evening glow and so I wanted the reflectors in front of the models with a light rebounding off the reflector casting a glow.

Another great lighting set up which I really liked the look of in the online photography blogs which I have read (Saved to my Pinterest Board – Here) is back lighting. This adds depth to the shot and also lights the model’s hair.  Two of the examples from my Pinterest Board which I wanted to use are below.

For the actual shoot we used a very similar set up to the above as you can see below.  Its only taken me 18 months but I think that I’m finally getting the hand of photographic lighting and the effects it can have.

Recreate Shoot 8 – Behind the Scenes

Well today’s shoot with Madison and Josh was pretty amazing. I had great feedback from my Tutor who said that Id created a flawless base with beautiful eyes and choice of colours.

Both Josh and Madison were a pleasure to work with and I can’t wait to do another shoot with them.

This is just a little extra post to show some behind the scenes photos as they are rarely seen in the industry and it’s something which I have been asked about previously.

As you can see from my work station, I am fairly tidy however I must confess that I do work mainly out of my Zuca Bag and pouches and so it leaves me with space on my station to spread out a bit. By the end of the session my work station didn’t look half as tidy!!!

You can see Madison and Josh before they have been made up and also our session in the studio with Carl, our photographer and Tutor.

Hope you enjoy the pics and as you can see, we all love what we do for a living and so have a great time at these shoots as well as producing some great images.

I will be choosing the final 3 images to edit next week and I’ll keep you informed of the progress.

Glossy and Wet Look Shoots – 1

Talia

Whilst I’ve got the gorgeous Talia booked, I decided to extend the booking for the whole of the day.  After my Natural Summer Makeup Shoot I have experimentation time in my Portfolio Development Module.  Instead of just messing about with makeup and playing on my colleagues, I have decided to do the experimenting on myself at home (stay tuned for some photos of me in all sorts of states!!!) and use the time in University more productively and create the experimented looks on my models and again with the use of the studios at Uni, create some more amazing photos for my portfolio.

The look I am creating in the morning is for my Showcase Magazine article regarding recreating a natural summer look and so Talia won’t be wearing too much makeup.  Talia has a perfect look for this style of makeup however I also believe that she will be ideal for more avant garde looks.

The second look which I am proposing to create on Talia is a high gloss eye with matte lips.  I like the idea of the two textures being in the one photo.  I am also going to mix things up by creating a nude gloss eye and dark berry lips.  Most of the images which I have found on the internet and saved to my Pinterest Board for this shoot have a metallic gloss eye and pink or red lips!  Trust me to want to do the complete opposite!!!  I know how I want this to look in my head and when I create all of my Face Charts next week, I will get a good feel for the idea and whether it works.

Some of the ideas for this shoot, i.e. glossy eye, can be seen below or on my Pinterest Board – Here

Hair

For the hair I am going to keep it tied back as I want the main emphasis on the face and especially the eyes.  I want to crop the photo in as close as possible.

Keep reading to see my experimentation and if you have any ideas on what you want me to write about or give step by step tutorials on, please email me at info@makeup-byclaire.co.uk and sign up to my Newsletter at my website – http://www.makeup-byclaire.co.uk.

Natural Summer Look – 1

I’ve booked my gorgeous model – Talia who is going to be with me in the studio on, all day on Thursday 17th March. I am doing 2, possibly 3 looks on this day as they will all follow on from each other and so be too difficult to change the hair and makeup for the next shoot.

Talia

The first shoot is to go with another one of my articles for the ‘Showcase Magazine’ which we are producing as an accumulation of our skills from the previous 2 years on our Makeup Artistry Degree Course.

I decided to create an article giving step by step information on how to create beautiful natural looking makeup for the summer months. I decided to do this article as I get asked by clients who want to wear makeup during the summer months, how to achieve a natural look.

I have chosen Talia because I believe that she has a naturally pretty look which will look great for this shoot and then I believe that she will be able to carry off the two more Avant Garde looks in the afternoon. For more info on my ideas for the eyeliner looks, please visit my Pinterest Board – Here

4192d7ad1cdcc69c834b1c3f5765ac5e

One of the main looks which I am aiming to achieve can be seen to the left and again on my Pinterest board which is linked above.  I am planning on evening out the skin tone and then using a minimal blush to add a natural healthy glow to the skin, followed by minimal eye and lip work.

Hairnatural 2

For the hair I am going to keep it loose and create a slight wave in it as the look isn’t structured and so I don’t want the hair to be either.

Posing Ideas

For this shoot, I think that it would look great in Didsbury Park however as we are in England and the shoot is taking place in March, I am not banking on having good enough weather to shoot outside and so I will also make plans for an inside shoot.  The posing will definitely depend upon the location.  If we are outside I would like the model to be walking through the park etc. however if she is in the studio then I believe that a more natural pose, looking at the camera may be the best.  For the magazine article the photo will be cropped to head and shoulders however how the model poses will determine the style of the shot, i.e. whether she is face onto the camera or her body is turned away and she is looking back over her shoulder etc. I like both posing ideas and so would like to try both to see which one I prefer on the day.  I have bought a summer style dress for the model to wear for an outside shoot however if we are in the studio I have a lovely strapless top which she can wear with jeans.

Lighting

Lighting will again depend upon the location.  I am hoping for a lovely spring day and want to use natural lighting with the natural makeup. The shoot is taking place at about 11am and so the lighting should be great for an outdoors shoot.

If we are in the studio, I want the lighting to be quite bright. Again, not over exposed but well-lit with the lighting on the face. I would like minimal shadow on the face as I want the model looking straight at the camera. For this I believe that I will have to have a light set up in front of my model as well as a side light. Before I set this up though I will speak to Carl, my Photography Tutor regarding his and possibly create a lighting plan on my iPad App.

This is an exciting semester for me personally as not only am I developing my portfolio via my assessments but I can also add to it via my magazine articles and also privately arranged shoots with Photographers.

I have a lot going on for the next 3 months and so my friends and family will think that I have disappeared but it will be worth it at the end of May when I get to submit all of my work and my final portfolio.

Photo Editing – aaaaaarrrrrrrgh!!

As part of our modules we have to produce contact sheets of all of the photos taken.  These are small photos, usually 24-30 photos per page. These show all of your photos together so that you can then choose which ones you like and which ones you want to discard. I found a great example of this on murraymitchell.com and it can be seen below.

Contact Sheet

Once we have our contact sheets and chosen the images we want in our portfolio, we then need to have a before editing photo and then we need to get creative on Photoshop and Picasa.  I have bought Photoshop Elements 11 for my PC and my husband has the full Photoshop on his PC however I am not the best at editing photos!  In our first year we had a full semester on using Photoshop and I have bought a couple of books on using Photoshop and still the whole thing baffles me!  I’m obviously not meant to be awesome at everything!!!!

With this in mind I have set out to contact Photo Retouchers and decided to use Purple Port as I am a subscribed member and you can look at reviews from other people.  I did a basic search for people with at least 2 reviews and came up with a list of people.  After checking out their pages I decided to contact Richard Colvill, who is a creative director / retoucher as I really like the look of his work.

Richard got back to me very quickly and I’m going to have a conversation with him regarding editing all the photos for my portfolio, not just the ones for this semester.

Eye Liner Storyboard – 2

Well I’ve heard from my lovely model – Georgia who is going to be with me in the studio on Thursday 3rd March recreating 7 different eyeliner looks for my Eyeliner Storyboard. This shoot is to go with one of my articles for the ‘Showcase Magazine’ which we are producing as an accumulation of our skills from the previous 2 years on our Makeup Artistry Degree Course.

Georgia

I decided to create an article giving step by step information on how to create 7 different winged eyeliner looks which are popular on the catwalk. With this article revolving around 7 different looks it gives me the opportunity to create not only a storyboard (1 page with 7 close cropped photos) but also 7 separate images, potentially for my portfolio.

I have chosen Georgia because I believe that she has amazing eyes and brows and will be able to carry off all of the looks including some of the more avant garde styles.  For more info on my ideas for the eyeliner looks, please visit my Pinterest Board

From the boards the 7 types of eyeliner which I have chosen to recreate are:

  • Classic Wing
  • Double Wing
  • Bold Wing
  • Graphic
  • Soft Sexy Square
  • Feline Ombre Flick
  • Two Colour Wing

Not only do I believe that some of these are classics which all women want to achieve but also some of the more daring eyeliner styles might give people ideas for their Saturday Night Out Makeup!

Hair & Additional Makeupeyemakeup ideas

For the hair I am going to keep it tied back and off the face. For this shoot the hair isn’t important and so I’m not going to spend time messing about with it.  For the eyes, I am going to keep all of the makeup neutral to emphasise the eye liner and for the lips I will begin with nude, working up to a dark Bordeaux shade at the end. For this to work, I will decide upon the order of the eyeliner, and then which colour lips I want with each eyeliner style.

Eyeliner Syle for storyboardPosing Ideas

For these shoots, the posing is essential as I want all of the storyboard photos to have the same pose and crop so that they all look the same.  For this I have chosen the
below look which can again be found on my Pinterest boards above.

For the individual photos I want the poses to show off the eyeliner style (however they will all be head shots) and so I have selected the below poses for the full face pictures.

Eyeliner 1

Lighting

I want the lighting to be quite bright. Not over exposed but well-lit with the lighting on the face. I would like minimal shadow on the faces. For this I believe that I will have to have a light set up in front of my model as well as at the side of the face which will be turned more towards the camera. Before I set this up though I will speak to Carl, my Photography Tutor regarding his and possibly create a lighting plan on my iPad App.

All photos used above can be found on my Pinterest Board

I cant wait to work with Georgia and have a fun day producing these amazing eyeliner looks.
